Did You Know?

  • The Jefferson Hotel was supposed to open on November 1, 1895, but at the last minute it was realized that November 1 was a Friday, and it was considered bad luck to start anything on a Friday. So the hotel was opened on Halloween instead.

  • From the time the hotel opened until 1937, rooms were just $1.50 per night.  A room with a private bath was $1 more per night.

  • The Thanksgiving Day Dinner at the hotel in 1949 cost $2.50.

  • When Elvis stayed at the hotel in 1956, he brought his own television and the hotel manager was shocked that Elvis ate his bacon with his fingers.

  • In the mid 1950s, the hotel had a pink limousine to drive guests throughout the city.

  • The Jefferson has been in several movies including My Dinner with Andre (1981), First Kid (1996), HBO's Ironed Jawed Angels (2004), The American President (1995) and the recently discovered Rock and Roll Hotel (early 1980's).

  • Alligators once resided in marble pools in the Palm Court Lobby.  Richmonders would vacation in Florida and bring the baby alligators home as pets.  As they outgrew sinks and bathtubs, residents would bring them to live at The Jefferson.  Tour the hotel’s public area and see how many alligators you can find today!

  • Twelve US Presidents, including Harrison, McKinley, Wilson, Coolidge, Taft, both Roosevelts (Theodore and Franklin Delano), Truman and Reagan, both Bushes (George H. W. and George W.) and Obama have been guests at The Jefferson Hotel.

  • Legend says that Bill "Bojangles" Robinson was discovered by his life-long agent while dancing across the dining room at The Jefferson Hotel. 

  • Frank Sinatra once entertained guests in Lemaire at The Jefferson Hotel with an impromptu performance after enjoying his dinner.

  • Artifacts from over a century of the hotel’s history are housed in a museum at the bottom of The Grand Staircase, including a photo of Elvis at the hotel's old lunch counter.

  • The priceless statue of Thomas Jefferson that stands watch over the Palm Court lobby has only left his post on one occasion.  In the 1902 hotel fire, he was rescued from the building only to have his head bumped on the cobblestones.  He took a brief vacation to Edward Valentine’s art studio where his head was reattached.

  • The Grand Staircase at The Jefferson Hotel has long been rumored to be the staircase featured in the iconic film, Gone with the Wind.

  • The Jefferson Hotel is often cited as one of the finest examples of Beaux Arts architecture still in existence today.

The Salon at The Jefferson offers a unique combination of convenience and luxury. Located off the Rotunda lobby, its chic décor and calming environment provide the perfect atmosphere for pampering and relaxation. A variety of unique services await you.

Hair
Experienced stylists offer an array of color, cutting, conditioning and styling services using Schwarzkopf products from Germany. The Salon at The Jefferson also offers the revolutionary Bio Ionic Retexturizing for permanent straightening and Keratin Complex for temporary hair straightening, which removes up to 98% of curl from hair with the use of ions. The advanced formula and ionic therapy leaves the hair healthier, softer and silkier than other similar techniques.

For your most important events, your stylist can finish your look with a formal occasion hair style. One-hour bridal consultation appointments are also available. Your stylist will help you determine whether a classic, dramatic, romantic or natural style will best complement your gown and then will create three different styles for you so that you can make the perfect selection for the big event.

The Salon is proud to have been selected by Unite as Richmond's only salon to use and carry their exclusive line of shampoos, conditioners, and styling products. Completely safe to use with all color, these products are known to leave hair unusually light and shiny.

Pedicures and Manicures
Our luxurious reclining pedicure chair with kneading roller system and bubbling footbath is the ultimate, whether you chose our "Just the Basics" pedicure for a quick refresh or our luxury pedicure including exfoliation, moisturizing and foot and leg massage. "Either service can be upgraded with a paraffin wax dip, callous treatment, mint mask, red eye rescue and 10 extra minutes of leg and foot massaging.

Manicures are available and include nail shaping, cuticle care, moisturizing and polish for women and buffing for men. Manicures may be upgraded with paraffin wax dip or a mint mask.

Facials
The Salon at The Jefferson offers an extensive menu of facial treatments with a skin care solution for all skin types.  From the firming of the Flaxx-C Anti-Aging Facial to the natural sea products used in the Repechage' Four Layer Facial, each treatment will leave you relaxed and glowing.   Or try our Bioelements Facial which is customized for your exact skin type or our Ultrasonic Facial which uses sound waves to gently push impurities out of the skin.

Hair Removal
Our Nufree Nudesse hair removal system uses soy-based products that remove unwanted hair at lower temperatures and with less pulling and irritation than traditional waxing.

Makeup Applications
Our mineral based makeup goes on like silk and is gentle enough for even those with the most sensitive skin. Colors are available in cool, warm and neutral shades to enhance all skin colors. Airbrush make-up is available for a long-lasting flawless finish.

Energy Balancing
The salon is pleased to offer a new innovative treatment called Energy Balancing. This is a noninvasive therapy that can promote relaxation and support well being leaving you refreshed and revitalized. Energy therapy is performed with little or no physical contact making this the perfect lunch time energy boost or end-of-the-day stress reliever. A one-hour treatment is recommended for maximum results but treatments are available in 15 minute increments.

Complete any hair style with one of the Salon's unique hair accessories, including feather clips, glitzy ornaments and hand sculpted flowers glowing with crystals, for casual fun or black tie elegance. These beautiful pieces are made with glass beads, crystals and fresh water pearls weaved around polished shells in a variety of natural colors and designs.
