Did You Know?

  • The Jefferson Hotel was supposed to open on November 1, 1895, but at the last minute it was realized that November 1 was a Friday, and it was considered bad luck to start anything on a Friday. So the hotel was opened on Halloween instead.

  • From the time the hotel opened until 1937, rooms were just $1.50 per night.  A room with a private bath was $1 more per night.

  • The Thanksgiving Day Dinner at the hotel in 1949 cost $2.50.

  • When Elvis stayed at the hotel in 1956, he brought his own television and the hotel manager was shocked that Elvis ate his bacon with his fingers.

  • In the mid 1950s, the hotel had a pink limousine to drive guests throughout the city.

  • The Jefferson has been in several movies including My Dinner with Andre (1981), First Kid (1996), HBO's Ironed Jawed Angels (2004), The American President (1995) and the recently discovered Rock and Roll Hotel (early 1980's).

  • Alligators once resided in marble pools in the Palm Court Lobby.  Richmonders would vacation in Florida and bring the baby alligators home as pets.  As they outgrew sinks and bathtubs, residents would bring them to live at The Jefferson.  Tour the hotel’s public area and see how many alligators you can find today!

  • Thirteen US Presidents, including Harrison, McKinley, Wilson, Coolidge, Taft, both Roosevelts (Theodore and Franklin Delano), Truman and Reagan, both Bushes (George H. W. and George W.), Clinton and Obama have been guests at The Jefferson Hotel.

  • Legend says that Bill "Bojangles" Robinson was discovered by his life-long agent while dancing across the dining room at The Jefferson Hotel. 

  • Frank Sinatra once entertained guests in Lemaire at The Jefferson Hotel with an impromptu performance after enjoying his dinner.

  • Artifacts from over a century of the hotel’s history are housed in a museum at the bottom of The Grand Staircase, including a photo of Elvis at the hotel's old lunch counter.

  • The priceless statue of Thomas Jefferson that stands watch over the Palm Court lobby has only left his post on one occasion.  In the 1902 hotel fire, he was rescued from the building only to have his head bumped on the cobblestones.  He took a brief vacation to Edward Valentine’s art studio where his head was reattached.

  • The Grand Staircase at The Jefferson Hotel has long been rumored to be the staircase featured in the iconic film, Gone with the Wind.

  • The Jefferson Hotel is often cited as one of the finest examples of Beaux Arts architecture still in existence today.

Management Positions

Front Desk Manager
FT/PT: Full Time

Manage all day-to-day functions of the Front Office operation and reports directly to the Hotel Manager. To ensure all Front Office policies and procedures are followed based on the operating criteria for a luxury hotel. Must possess previous Front Desk and Management experience, have proven LEADERSHIP abilities, excellent communication skills and able to make decisions to ensure guest satisfaction. Must be proficient in learning and use of hotel software. Hospitality degree preferred.

Sous Chef
FT/PT: Full Time

An ideal candidate would have have minimum 2 years Sous Chef experience in a busy relaxed dining restaurant environment, as well as some experience in a high-volume banquet or catering setting. Will be responsible for assisting the Executive Chef in overseeing food and labor costs, quality control and must possess strong culinary and organizational skills. Position will encompass both àla carte restaurant service as well as a busy banquet kitchen. Must also be a proven motivational leader with the ability to manage the financial side of the operation. Culinary school a plus. Also must possess computer skills. Will need to be flexible to work any shift and any day of the week.

Rooms Division

Houseman
FT/PT: Part Time
Shift Hours: 7:00am - 3:00pm and 3:00pm to 11:00pm

Position provides assistance in the cleaning of guest rooms such as stripping beds, emptying trash, etc. Also responsible for general cleaning of guest hallways, stocking supplies, guest satisfaction and interaction with guests. Must be team oriented and physically able to lift up to 50+ lbs. Will also be assigned to take care of various areas in the hotel that need attention. Prior housekeeping experience is helpful. Excellent people skills and communication skills a must! Must be able to work ANY night including weekends and holidays. **We are a Drug Free Work Place and require Pre-Employment Drug Testing**

Room Attendant

HOUSEKEEPING SUPERVISOR

Will assist in overseeing the operation of a busy Housekeeping department. Must have previous management/supervisory experience in Housekeeping of a large size, full service hotel property. Must be able to lead and motivate staff of 35. Must have an eye for detail and expectations of great service. Must be able to work well with others, achieve goals and be fully flexible to work any day of the week, weekends & Holidays.

Midnight Bellman
FT/PT: Part Time

Will greet all arriving and departing guests from the hotel using the Five Diamond/Five Star standards. Will assist overnight arriving guests w/ luggage and escort them to the Front Desk. May also assist valet with parking and retrieving guest vehicles. Must be able to operate automatic and manual vehicles safely. Must have excellent driving record (0-+ points) and a valid Virginia Driver’s license. Must possess excellent communication skills and effectively work with others.
